What is a Fellow? 

A Fellow is an individual who has demonstrated sustained, significant achievements in engineering, technology, or related disciplines over at least five years.   

IET Fellow (FIET) is the highest category of membership within the IET.  

It is a mark of professional distinction and leadership. 

Purpose and vision

Fellowship offers an inspirational environment where Fellows can exchange ideas, engage in purposeful discussions, and support the search for engineering and technological solutions to the wide-ranging challenges facing society.

Who is Fellowship for?

IET Fellows are engineers and technologists with proven strategic impact, leadership, innovation, or thought leadership. 

Applicants come from industry, academia, and consultancy backgrounds, including those who are self-employed or not currently employed.  

You donot need to be an existing IET member to apply.  

Applicants typically include: 

  • Chartered engineers
  • Senior researchers
  • Technology leaders
  • Professors and academics.

How do you become a Fellow?

To become a Fellow:  

  • You should meet at least two of the nine criteria (e.g. leadership, innovation, influence) sustained over five years and within the last ten years. 
  • You’ll need to find two supporters: One must be an IET Fellow or a Fellow of another recognised engineering institution.
  • Create and submit your application via our Career Manager professional development tool.  

If you're not an IET Member yet, you can still use Career Manager to submit your application.

How long does the application process take? 

Typically, the application process takes about 20 weeks via Career Manager. This timescale is dependent upon the quality of the application, whether there is a request for further evidence, or whether there is an interview.   

Should an interview be requested, then the process may take slightly longer.

How much does it cost? 

The current Fellow application fee is £182.

  • Fellowship Advisors 
    Connect with one of our Fellowship Advisors. They’ll help you understand the process, select the appropriate criteria, and present your evidence effectively.

    Career Manager will guide you through the application and offer additional information and support throughout the process.

How to apply 

  1. Check if you're eligible
    You’ll need at least five years of significant achievements in engineering or technology and meet two or three of the Fellowship criteria. 

  1. Get on Career Manager
    Visit our Career Manager web page and log in or register for an account to get started. 

  1. Review the criteria
    You can find a copy of the criteria on our website or on the ‘Before you begin’ section in Career Manager. 

  1. Find two supporters
    They should know you professionally and be well-regarded. One must be an IET Fellow or a Fellow of another recognised institution. 

  1. Fill in the form
    Complete the form on Career Manager. No CVs or certificates please. 

  1. Get your supporters’ approval
    This can all be done through Career Manager as you progress your application. 

    Alternatively, you can download copies of the Supporters forms

  1. Submit your application
    At this point you can download a copy from Career Manager to share with your Advisor or you can submit your application for verification. 

  1. Pay the fee
    You’ll get an email with a secure link to pay the application fee. 

  1. Wait for the result
    The panel will review your application, and they’ll be in touch with their decision.
