Chartered IT Professional (CITP) - what happens next and the outcome/decision.

How we use your personal data

Information provided by you will be used by the IET and the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of processing your CITP application.

Application process

Your application will follow a three stage process. At every stage, you will be able to login and track the progress of your application online. You will be provided with a link once your application has been submitted.

1 – Application (Initial Review)

Upon receipt of your application, a peer review of the information provided will be conducted by a CITP assessor. Assuming all information is provided and reminders are not required regarding supporter information this stage should take approximately 25 working days.

Upon successful completion of this stage, your application will progress to stage 2 Breadth of Knowledge Test.

2 – Breadth of Knowledge Test (BoK)

This stage involves a formal test of core knowledge across the breadth of IT. You will take the test at a Pearson Vue test centre [new window]; these are located all around the UK and in 160 other countries. Travelling costs to and from a test centre is not included in the application fee. The test must be booked within six months of receiving notification that you have successfully passed the first stage.

CITP applicants are required to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge, not just within their own specialism, but across IT as a whole.

The test comprises 75 multiple choice questions which cover a broad range of topics. Candidates will be required to achieve a pass mark in each of the five sections, as well as on the paper as a whole. The section pass mark is 8 out of 15, and the overall pass mark is 50.

Applicants are entitled to one re-sit during the same six month period, from notification of stage 1 result, without an additional application fee.

BCS have reviewed the syllabus for the BoK test and all applicants for CITP status who will take the test on or after the 1st December 2015 will be presented with questions based on the new syllabus:

To give you an idea of what to expect, you may wish to take the short interactive test, consisting of five multiple choice questions. The results of this test are for your benefit only.

On passing the BoK Test, your application will progress to stage 3 Assessment Interview stage

3 – Assessment Interview

You will provide a short presentation and speak for about 10 minutes, using examples from work for which you have been personally responsible to demonstrate your professional competence in your area of IT specialism.

You will be interviewed by two assessors, at least one of whom will have knowledge and experience of your specialism, and the presentation and interview will last around 45 minutes. The process will be carried out online using conferencing software and secure document portals.

After progressing to this stage, you are given six months to undertake your interview. If more than six months elapses you will be required to submit a new online application and fee.

Successful applicants for CITP will receive a communication from the IET to confirm the decision, together with notification of the CITP first registration and Certificate of Current Competence (CoCC) fees. Once your fee has been received, your name will be added to the register of Chartered IT Professionals [new window].

Should your application be unsuccessful you will receive a communication from the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.

You may re-apply for CITP online via the IET after a six month period following the decision from your previous application.

Transferring your CITP to the IET

CITP registrants requesting to transfer their CITP renewal via the IET, must have a minimum of two complete years remaining on their CoCC before selecting the transfer button, which will be displayed on the screen once you are logged into the IET web site as a member.
