Remembering John Nash CEng MIET – A life dedicated to engineering and communications
John Nash devoted his professional life to telecommunications, building a distinguished international career with Cable & Wireless and playing a part in the development and maintenance of global communications networks that connected people and nations.
His commitment to the engineering profession was reflected early in his decision to join the Institution of Electronic and Radio Engineers in 1961. Achieving Chartered Engineer status in 1983, an accomplishment of which he remained immensely proud, marked an important milestone, and he subsequently progressed to full membership. Through the Institution’s evolution into today’s Institution of Engineering and Technology, John maintained a strong and enduring connection with us, valuing our role in upholding professional standards and supporting lifelong learning.

Even after retiring from full-time work, John remained an active and engaged member. He took a keen interest in developments across telecommunications and the wider engineering landscape, and he greatly valued the IET’s technical publications as a means of maintaining technical excellence. In 1993, he made a lasting contribution to the Institution by donating back copies of journals to the archives, demonstrating both his long-standing association with the us and his desire to support the preservation of engineering knowledge for future generations.
John’s career took him to postings around the world, where he applied his expertise with professionalism, technical curiosity and quiet determination, qualities that strongly reflected the values of the engineering community he was proud to be part of. In retirement, he continued to give back to the profession as a founder volunteer at the Telegraph Museum in Porthcurno, helping to share the history and significance of communications engineering with the public.
He will be remembered as a committed engineer, a proud Chartered Engineer, and a valued IET member who cared deeply about his profession and its community.
