IET in the news

We’ve been hitting the headlines across a range of media outlets.

Electrical safety in focus

Throughout April and May, our press office was focused on all things electrical, with two key activations launching in parallel following the release of Amendment 4 to the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations.

The trade launch saw an industry‑focused press release distributed to targeted sector media, achieving coverage across all major trade publications.

A thought leadership piece by Mark Coles, our head of technical regulations, was also placed in Professional Electrician & Installer’s June issue, extending the campaign’s reach in the coming months.

Our ‘Switched on to Safety’ consumer campaign launched across web, social and press, with spokespeople from our Technical Regulations team appearing on over 50 radio shows, including BBC Radio 5 and Fix Radio, bringing electrical safety messaging directly to both consumer and industry audiences.

Momentum continued around plug‑in solar PV safety, building on Mark’s expert commentary. We were interviewed by The i Paper and The Daily Mail, and cited in The Independent and The Conversation UK, cementing our position as the trusted voice on consumer electrical safety.

Experts in the news

Our expert profile continued to drive reactive media opportunities throughout April, May and June, with highlights including a WISE (Women into Science and Engineering) comment supplied to the Financial Times, commentary for WIRED on the skills survey and a contribution to the Science Media

In April, a number of our experts were featured in online articles on Prospects, the UK’s leading graduate careers platform.

Contributors included Graham Herries, who was quoted in a graduate careers piece; Dr Laura Norton, head of EDI at the IET and WISE director, who shared insight on addressing barriers to entering the industry; and Rachel Donaghey MIET, our Mary George Young Woman Engineer of the Year Apprentice winner 2025.

Introducing the new WISE brand

WISE (Women into Science and Engineering), together with the IET, has launched a refreshed brand reflecting its evolving role in supporting women, as well as individuals and organisations, across science, engineering and construction.

While WISE’s mission remains unchanged – improving equity and opportunity for women in STEM – its focus has sharpened in response to growing skills challenges, workforce pressures and the need for measurable, long‑term impact.

The refreshed brand sits alongside an updated membership model, designed to help employers move from intention to action by supporting retention, progression and sustainable workforce development.

Dr Laura Norton, WISE director, said:

“This evolution ensures WISE remains relevant and effective in a changing landscape. Despite the breadth of opportunity in engineering and technology, women still make up just 16% of the UK workforce, driven by persistent stereotypes, misconceptions about the profession and a lack of visible role models.

“Together with the IET, WISE is focused on addressing these barriers by combining advocacy with practical, evidence‑based approaches that support organisations and individuals to create more inclusive cultures and clearer pathways into engineering.

“By showcasing real role models and supporting long‑term change, we can help more women see STEM as a rewarding and sustainable career, and deliver real outcomes for the sector.”
