Education volunteers

The IET needs Education Volunteers to help introduce young people to the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and raise awareness of engineering careers.

How you can help

Working with schools, youth groups and other activities which support opportunities for young people to learn about engineering, you will use your expertise in   to inspire the next generation of engineers. As part of your role you could:

  • support local schools, youth clubs and relevant activities
  • attend careers talks and science fairs, including providing careers presentations
  • be involved withFIRST LEGO League and Faraday Challenge Days

You will need to have good communication skills, an active interest in the development of young people of all ages and abilities, and enthusiasm to share your knowledge and passion for the engineering and technology profession.

In return this role will help you to build upon your teamwork, leadership, communication, organisational and time management skills, and allow you to widen your own professional network.

We have a wide range of activity kits, games and STEM resources which are free for all our Education Volunteers to help promote STEM to young people.

Introducing young people to engineering is a rewarding experience and can contribute to your valuable continuing professional development (CPD). If you’re concerned about your employer supporting your involvement in this activity, we may be able to help.

The amount of time we ask you give to this role would amount to four volunteering events per year. This could be a mix of in-person and virtual events, either self-arranged or IET arranged.
