Hear from our inspiring members

Daniel Mitchell
Daniel won the Rising Star of the Year Award (part of the The IET Excellence and Innovation Awards) in 2023. This recognised the significant positive impact he has already made already in his engineering career, by fostering collaboration and breaking down barriers between students and researchers, enabling them to work together in teams to solve real-world challenges.
"As an IET Student member, I can keep up to date with the state of the art via the E+T magazine. I have also been able to attend the IET Scotland events which enable me to network with a diverse group of engineers where I can find out more about key challenges that industry needs to address etc. Finally, advantages when publishing within IET Journals where most recently I published within IET Cyber-Systems and Robotics."
Matthew Wainwright EngTech TMIET
Matthew Wainwright has a strong work ethic that has seen him overcome a learning disability, develop a broad skillset, gain qualifications and earn the respect of colleagues and customers alike.
The process of applying for Professional Registration as an IET Engineering Technician proved hugely beneficial. “It gave me something to focus on and a chance to highlight the skills I had learned up to that point,” he said. Matthew achieved EngTech status in December 2022 and has now now set his sights on achieving IET Incorporated Engineer status (IEng).
Matthew is very pleased that he joined the IET. He said: “I find the E+T and Member News magazines very informative and always enjoy reading about members’ careers and achievements. I hope my own story will inspire people who doubt themselves or think that having a learning disability will hold them back".

Soumia Ayyadi MIET
Soumia is a Research and Development Engineer working at the University of Strathclyde Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC).
"My IET membership enables me to access valuable resources, networking opportunities, and professional development support. By becoming a member of the IET, I gained access to a diverse community of peers and experts, allowing me to stay updated on industry trends, and expand my professional networks."
"In addition, membership provides access to exclusive events, publications, and training programs, which helps me enhance my skills, advance my career, and stay at the forefront of technological advancements."
Dawn Ohlson CEng FIET
Dawn Ohlson is the Technical Director for Northrop Grumman National Security Services.
Dawn recently became the youngest female IET Fellow; “For me, being recognised as a Fellow was an important milestone in my career. It is a recognition of achievement, and I definitely see it as a badge of honour. This is most noticeable when meeting external customers and when working internationally. It is very well recognised.”
Dawn’s passion for developing younger engineers led her to present the IET Faraday lecture to promote engineering and technology to 14 to 16-year-olds, touring the UK, Ireland, and Asia.
“By giving back, I’m able to see the next generation flourish. Being an IET Fellow lends credibility, and lets those I work with to develop know they’re in safe hands.”
