Exploring emerging tech with an interdisciplinary passion

Phoebe Pashov is an MEng Biochemical Engineering student and IET Student Member with a keen interest in disruptive technologies and entrepreneurial ventures.

Driven by curiosity and a passion for problem-solving, Phoebe has always been fascinated by the mechanisms behind the world around us.

Growing up, Phoebe spent countless hours repairing and building bikes with her brother, which gave her an early hands-on introduction to engineering.

Later, a love for mathematics and science flourished in school, leading her to the realisation that these skills could be applied to solve complex problems.

“When I came across biochemical engineering, I saw it as an opportunity to enter engineering through a broad lens where I could explore maths, chemistry, biology and physics all in one.” she said.

Learning in action

One of Phoebe’s favourite aspects of her course is the scenario weeks, which present students with real-world case studies. “It’s not just about technical skills.” She explained that these weeks gave them a chance to show other skills such as presentation, technical communication and team collaboration.

The interdisciplinary nature of the course also excites Phoebe, who thrives on the challenge of balancing a diverse workload. “The content is definitely challenging, but that’s what makes it so inspiring and stimulating,” she said. “There can be parts of the term where we have many deadlines, but the course-works are usually collaborative, and we are given plenty of time and resources to complete them.”

Exploring new opportunities

While still early in her journey as an IET student member, Phoebe is enthusiastic about engaging with the engineering and technology community. “I like being part of the knowledge network and staying up-to-date with the tech industry,” Phoebe shared. “The IET is a great place to identify opportunities, and I look forward to using it to fuel my career path.”

In addition to academic pursuits, Phoebe is a member of the Immunology Society and completed a research internship in the biotechnology market during the first-year summer break. These experiences have fuelled a desire to explore emerging and disruptive technologies. “I can see myself being either a part of a startup or even becoming an entrepreneur myself,” she said.

Excited for the future

As Phoebe continues to explore the vast possibilities of biochemical engineering, with a mindset rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and determination, she is set to make her mark in the world of emerging tech.
