Engineering a future in IoT and embedded systems

IET Member Yash Akbari is a final-year BEng Computer Science student with a passion for solving global challenges through innovation in IoT, software and embedded systems.

With a lifelong fascination for technology’s potential to transform lives, Yash is driven by the possibilities of engineering to create meaningful change.

From an early curiosity about how systems work to pursuing a diploma in Information Technology, he has cultivated a deep appreciation for the practical and theoretical aspects of technology.

“My journey into engineering began with an IoT project during my diploma,” Yash explained. “This hands-on experience sparked my curiosity and led me to explore further in the field.”

In particular Yash developed an interest in embedded systems and artificial intelligence.

Why Computer Science?

Choosing to study Computer Science at university felt like the natural next step for Yash. “It offers the perfect balance of theoretical foundations and practical applications,” he said. “The ability to work at the intersection of hardware and software, creating solutions that can address global challenges, made this course the perfect fit for me.”

The dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the course has been a constant source of engagement. Whether designing algorithms, programming microcontrollers, or studying system architecture, Yash thrives on applying new knowledge to real-world problems. “I particularly enjoy the hands-on projects, as they allow me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts.”

A day in the life

A typical day involves attending lectures on theoretical concepts, followed by laboratory sessions to experiment and apply those lessons in practical settings. Yash also spends significant time in the library, exploring new technologies and working on projects. “In the evenings, I dedicate time to self-study and reviewing materials to stay ahead in my coursework,” he said. This balance ensures continued engagement with learning material and his studies.

While the mathematical modules have presented its own set of challenges, Yash overcame them through persistence, self-study, and guidance from professors. “Balancing coursework and extracurricular activities has also been a challenge,” he added, “but effective time management has allowed me to stay on track and successfully manage my responsibilities.”

Hands-on experience and milestones

Yash’s collaboration on IoT projects with external companies has provided him invaluable insights into the practical side of engineering ahead of his formal positions in the industry. “These collaborations provided me with valuable experience in applying theoretical concepts to real-world applications, and gave me insights into the practical side of engineering, including project management and teamwork,” he said.

Some of the highlights of his journey include representing his university in the Hard and Soft Competition in Romania, his involvement in GDG London events and attending the Linux Foundation Xen Project Summit. “These experiences allowed me to network with industry professionals, gain insights and taught me lessons about teamwork, adaptability, and overcoming challenges,” Yash shared.

Looking ahead

With career aspirations centred on IoT and embedded systems, Yash envisions a future of developing innovative solutions that integrate hardware and software to address global issues. “My goal is to continue learning and growing within the industry, gaining expertise in areas like smart technologies, automation, and sustainable solutions.”

The role of the IET

Joining the IET was a key step in Yash’s professional development. “Being a member of the IET enables me to stay informed about industry trends, gain insights from experienced professionals, and access valuable learning opportunities that are essential for my growth as an engineer,” he explained.

The E+T Magazine, webinars, and conferences have also been instrumental in Yash’s growth. “These experiences have inspired me and helped me connect with industry professionals, keeping me motivated and focused on my career path.”

With an unrelenting effort to innovate and a clear vision for the future, Yash is set to make a significant impact in IoT and embedded systems, blending theoretical expertise with practical solutions to address real-world challenges.
