Engineering, technology and the way our members learn, connect and engage have changed significantly since the IET's last governance review in 2016. The IET has evolved too, adapting how we support members, deliver services and contribute to the profession.
Following more than two years of review, research, engagement and consultation, the Board of Trustees is recommending a new governance model designed to ensure the way we are governed reflects how we operate today and how we need to operate in the future, so we can continue serving members, volunteers and the engineering profession effectively in the years ahead.
The recommendations are intended to create governance that is simpler, clearer and better equipped for the future, while preserving the values that define us as a member-led institution.
Members will soon be asked to vote on the Board's recommendations. This page brings together everything you need to understand the recommendations, explore what is changing and what will stay the same, and make an informed decision when voting opens.
The Board's recommendations are designed to create governance that is:
SIMPLER
Making it easier to understand how the IET works, engage with governance and make better use of the time, expertise and commitment of members and volunteers.
CLEARER
Creating stronger accountability, better-defined responsibilities and greater transparency about how decisions are made and who is responsible for them.
STRONGER
Strengthening the connection between members and decision-making through a new Members' Assembly, helping ensure member perspectives, experiences and priorities continue to inform governance discussions, operational activity and decision-making throughout the organisation, alongside the many ways members already engage and work with us.
READY
A future-ready governance framework that modernises the way we work, supports more effective decision-making and enables us to continue serving members and the engineering profession in a rapidly changing world.
Why your vote matters
The Board has completed its review and made its recommendations.
Because implementing the recommended governance model requires changes to the IET's Royal Charter and Bye-laws, members have the final say on whether those recommendations should be adopted.
This decision will help shape how the IET is governed in the future, including how member perspectives, experiences and priorities continue to be represented within the organisation.
As a member-led institution, participation in the vote is an important part of ensuring the future governance of the IET reflects the needs and expectations of our membership.
