Savoy Place - It is good

The IET flagship London office continues to be recognised

The IET’s London base: Savoy Place, closed in 2013, underwent a £30 million renovation and re-opened in December 2015 continues to achieve recognition. The latest accolade is it a BREEAM rating of ‘Good’.

Accessibility and connectivity was at the heart of the IET’s re-design. The venue was repositioned as a Global Engineering Hub – a natural destination for all technology and engineering events with all the facilities, tech and expertise to accommodate them with ease.

This incorporated a complete overhaul of its digital infrastructure, including embedding an advanced digital ‘fibre core’, which seamlessly allows events to be streamed live around the building and around the globe. The installation of over 100 screens, video walls and lighting systems, which customers can easily brand and incorporate into their event for little or no extra cost.

The new Johnson Roof Terrace, offering panoramic views across London and River Thames, the new space has added a wow factor to events, and additional capacity for up to 200 people.

There have been 88,684 visitors at Savoy Place since it re-opened, including David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn , Sir Roger Moore and Andrew Smyth from the Great British Bake Off. On the 26 October this year HRH The Princess Royal attended a special ceremony for the its official re-opening. The roof top terrace has seen 8,109 guests and played host to 101 rooftop events.

Savoy Place became the venue of choice for numerous high-profile events – from high-profile Government media conferences in the lead up to the Brexit vote to BBC Breakfast broadcasts and the Michelin Restaurant Awards. Many science technology and engineering organisations including Cambridge Wireless, IBM, Hewlett Packard Siemens, IRSE, ICE and iMeche have also held events and conferences at Savoy Place.

Sean Spencer, IET Venues & Facilities Manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the year we have had. It has been a much busier year than we expected, but the team has really excelled over the last 12 months to deliver every single event on time, and we look forward to building on this in 2017.”

With 167,000 global members, there was an expectation for the venue to deliver seamless technical and digital production to members. It has succeeded and settled into place as an engineering hub, offering networking opportunities for today’s forward-thinking engineers.

The IET Venues team won an award for Best New or Refurbished Venue for Savoy Place at the London Venue Awards on 14 October 2016 after the venue's structural and digital refurbishment.

The winners were announced following a meticulous judging process involving over 30 representatives from the Venues and Events sector. One judge commented: "Excellent entry that really highlights the vision behind what has to be one of the most anticipated openings in London."

Earlier in the year The IET Venues team added a Meetings & Incentive Travel Industry Award to their collection.
