General Questions

What is the relationship between the IET Journals and Wiley?

The IET journals are owned and managed by the IET. We have an internal team of publishing professionals developing our titles, including dedicated managing, commissioning and research integrity editors, along with thousands of academics and researchers who make up our Editorial Boards. Wiley, as our Publisher, supports the entire workflow for authors, editors and reviewers from manuscript submission through peer-review, to production, hosting, archiving and bespoke marketing.

When the IET decided to transition its journal programme to open access (OA) in 2020, we looked for a partner who not only had the experience to support the transition to fully open access but would also share the IET’s cultural values. After exploring several options, the IET selected Wiley, a leading organisation that has pioneered the delivery of content solutions in new and innovative ways.

One such example of innovation is the rise of “publish and read” initiatives which seek to enable large scale transition of scholarly journals to open access. Wiley has been at the forefront of negotiations with leading consortia and institutions around the world, providing thousands of researchers with open access to journal content whilst enabling them to publish their own work open access, at no cost to themselves. IET journals are included in such initiatives, benefitting from Wiley’s extensive networks of authors, libraries and institutions.

Are all IET Journals open access?

Engineering and technology research helps solve society's challenges which is why all 48 IET journals are openly accessible to all.

Most of our journals are gold open access, charging an article publishing charge (APC) to cover the costs of publishing. A number of journals, in partnership with institutions in China, publish under a diamond open access model, meaning that the APCs are sponsored and there is no charge to the authors, their institutions or their funders.

Prior to 2021, when we transitioned to a fully open access journals programme, there was a mixture of open access and hybrid titles. The IET made the previously paywalled content published from 2013 up until 2020 Free To Read – free to access, download and share, but not subject to a creative commons licence.

What are the benefits of publishing open access?

  • You, as the authors, retain copyright in your work through a Creative Commons license
  • Contributesto advancing knowledge and understanding faster, as other researchers can build on your work: driving impact, innovation and collaboration
  • Research shows that OA articles receive 3.6x views and 1.6x citations: more visibility for your work helps build or enhance your research profile
  • Practitioners can access and use the results of your research – regardless of where they are or of their affiliation
  • Complies with your funder or institutional policies and mandates

How can I seek permission to reuse content from the Journal Archive?

Please enter the details of the content you wish to reuse on Copyright Clearance Centre. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please reach out to journals@theiet.org and we’ll support you directly.

The IET publishes some journals with partners – can you tell us about those relationships?

How can I get involved in the IET Journals?

Our journals support your research community, and we value the contributions made by the thousands of authors, reviewers and editors. There are many different ways to get involved with our journals: you could submit your research or review paper for consideration, lead a special issue on a dedicated topic, become a peer reviewer to keep up to date with the latest research in your field, or help shape the future of the field by joining as an editor. You can find out more information here.

Author questions

Thinking of submitting your paper to an IET journal?

We’d be delighted to receive your paper for review. For information on the aims and scope, APCs and article submissions, please refer to the Author Guidelines of your chosen journal on the IET Research Hub for your chosen journal.

Papers can be submitted directly to an IET journal via its dedicated online submission site. To submit a manuscript, go to the IET Research Hub, select the journal you wish to submit to, and click the ‘Submit a Manuscript’ link.

What is the peer review process?

The review process varies from journal to journal, but all titles provide an efficient peer review and production process to facilitate rapid publication. Most journals follow a single-anonymised review process.

Research articles submitted directly to an IET journal will be fully peer reviewed by at least two appropriately qualified experts in the field selected by the Editor-in-Chief, or a senior member of the Editorial Board. The Editor-in-Chief or a designated member of the Editorial Board will then decide whether to accept, reject or request revisions based on the reviews and comments received.

Editors will decide whether each submission reports well-conducted research with conclusions supported by the data presented in the paper.

What is the copyright policy for IET journals?

All of the IET’s fully open access journals publish articles under a Creative Commons License, allowing authors to comply with funder and institutional mandates. Authors retain the copyright to their work and the public is allowed to reuse the content. You grant the IET a license to publish the article and identify as the original publisher. All journals offer three license types; read your chosen journal’s author guidelines for details on the journal’s specific copyright agreement.

Are the journals indexed in DOAJ, Clarivate, Scopus, EI etc.?

When you choose our journals for your research, we know you want to reach the widest audience – that's why we are fully open access, and that’s why we work with the abstract and indexing services that are appropriate for each journal, including Clarivate’s Web of Science, to ensure the greatest visibility. Full information about this for each journal can be found on individual journal homepages.

How can I read articles?

All articles are published on the IET Research Hub via Wiley Online Library and are immediately freely available to read, download and share. You can search for a specific article on the IET Research Hub homepage, or visit a journal homepage for a full list of issues.

Articles are simultaneously published on the IET’s Digital Library.

What is the editorial structure for the journals?

Each journal has an Editor-in-Chief, Senior/Associate Editors (for some titles) and an editorial board consisting of global experts in the fields related to the scope of the journal. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for ensuring the overall quality of the journal, making final decisions on which papers to publish, with support from the Associate Editors and editorial board members.

What are the Article Publication Charges for IET journals?

To cover the cost of publishing, IET journals charges a publication fee - known as an Article Publication Charge (APC). This is the price an author, institution or funder pays on acceptance for publication of an open access article. APCs vary depending on the journal; for a full list of IET Open Access fees, see here. Discounts are available for authors of referred papers, members of participating society journals submitting articles directly, and authors from institutions with a Wiley Open Access Account.

How do I pay for my Article Publication Charge?

The corresponding author is responsible for making payment of Article Publication Charges or for providing details of the funding organization or institution that will be making payment on their behalf. If your manuscript’s Article Publication Charge is being paid by a funding organization or institution then payment will be made by the appropriate funding body directly with Wiley . Otherwise, payment of the Article Publication Charge can be made by credit card, check or bank transfer. Details are included in the invoice that you’ll receive.

More information on Article Publication Charges can be found here.

What support is available for APCs?

  • Fee waivers or discounts are available for authors based in countries listed here.
  • Your institution or funder may be able to help with open access APCs through a Wiley Open Access Account.
  • Members of the IET are also eligible for 15% on the article publishing charge (APC).

I have a question that isn’t answered here, how can I get in touch?

Please reach out to journals@theiet.org; we’ll respond to your query as quickly as possible.

Are Conference Proceedings open access too?

For now, most of our Conference Proceedings content is not. However, we can, and do, publish Proceedings on an open access basis should the conference organisers wish to do so.
