S900 - Technician and higher level skills

Inquiry into Technician and higher level skills: IET comments to the Skills Commission.

The UK’s engineering and IT (information technology) sectors suffer from significant skills shortages, particularly at technician level, and these must be addressed as a matter of priority. Professional engineering institutions like the IET can play a key part in efforts to address skills shortages at technician level through approval of apprenticeships and professional registration. Despite the many benefits of technician registration, at present it is not nearly as common as registration at Chartered level. The work of the Technical Council, which is focusing on technician registration in the engineering, ICT (information and communication technology), science and health sectors, is supported.
