S1001 - ECC inquiry into future challenges in energy and climate change policy

Future challenges in energy and climate change policy: IET evidence to the House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee

Abstract Energy policy needs to maintain the necessary trajectory towards our committed 80% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050 whilst maintaining affordability and security of energy supplies.  Challenges include: introducing an easy-to-understand carbon pricing regime; achieving good pricing for new nuclear beyond Hinkley Point C; delivering a CCS project and ensuring other new technologies are fostered; determining the optimum future role for gas distribution and use; creating a strong and supportive regulatory environment for district heating and cooling, and heat storage; deciding our strategy for shale gas; making a step change in energy efficiency; providing the consistency and confidence necessary for investors to make long term commitments and communicating energy policy choices and their implications to the electorate.
