Leading Chinese engineer honoured for achievements in energy

Esteemed engineer Professor Zhenya Liu, has been rewarded for his outstanding achievements in energy and electric power technologies, with an Honorary Fellowship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Professor Liu Zhenya is an expert and a leader in areas of ultra-high-voltage power grid and global energy interconnection. He is currently the Chairman of GEIDCO – the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization – in Beijing, China, and the Chairman of the China Electricity Council.

He has served as Chairman and President of State Grid Corporation of China, inaugurated and organised research on ultra-high-voltage technologies, and led research and development on related equipment and engineering application in the whole process.

On receiving his Honorary Fellowship, Prof. Liu said: “It's a great honour for me to receive the Honorary Fellowship from the IET. I shall continue to work on the application of UHV transmission technology throughout the world, be dedicated to promoting the global energy interconnection and contribute to clean energy transition and sustainable development of the world.”

Mike Carr, IET President, said: “I am delighted that we are able to mark the outstanding achievements of Professor Zhenya, with one of the IET’s highest honours, Honorary Fellowship. He is a highly distinguished engineer and has made a significant contribution to electric power, particularly ultra-high-voltage technologies, across the world.”

Professor Liu actively promotes the establishment of global energy interconnection, which provides an effective solution to combating global challenges, such as climate change, environmental pollution and energy resource constraints, and has been brought into the framework of the 2030 sustainable development agenda of the United Nations.

He has received two China State Science and Technology Grand Awards and is the author of many learned society publications, including several books of which Ultra-high Voltage AC/DC Grids and Global Energy Interconnection have been published in Chinese, English and Russian and received excellent reviews.
