Welcome to the September-October issue of IET Member News.
As always, you, our members, are at the heart of the stories in this issue. From award-winning researchers and dedicated volunteers to future engineers taking their first steps into the profession, this issue highlights the many ways our members contribute to engineering’s ongoing impact on society.
Research and innovation remain a common thread throughout this issue. We celebrate the achievements of our 2026 Postgraduate Research Award winners, whose work spans fields including healthcare, engineering biology and sustainable energy. We also hear from Professor J Paulo Davim FIET later in the issue, who reflects on international recognition and the role we have played throughout his career.
We know that supporting future engineers starts early – that’s why we’re delighted to share the stories of Amber and Bassel, whose experiences through FIRST® LEGO® League demonstrate the importance of STEM engagement in building confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills.
Dr Carol Marsh OBE FIET reflects on receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award and the impact volunteering, mentoring and leadership have had throughout her career. We also spotlight Evonah Teh, whose volunteer journey highlights the many ways members contribute their time and expertise to support others.

Supporting the next generation of engineers
As a new academic year begins, Foothold, the IET's benevolent fund, is helping engineering students and apprentices access the support they need to thrive.
Through its Engineering Neurodiverse Futures (ENF) programme, Foothold provides fully funded neurodiversity assessments, mentoring, coaching and wellbeing support for engineering students and apprentices who may be neurodivergent.
With ADHD Awareness Month taking place in October, it's an important reminder that, with the right support in place, neurodivergent engineers can bring valuable perspectives, creativity and problem-solving skills to the profession.
