Breaking new ground in FemTech: The engineer behind FlowSense
Muna Daud, IET award-winning engineer develops the world’s first period detection device to support women with visual impairments.
Who is Muna and what does she do?
Muna Daud is an award-winning multidisciplinary designer, engineer and researcher, and the Founder and CEO of FlowSense.
With a background in innovation and a strong focus on inclusive design, Muna’s work sits at the intersection of engineering, women’s health and accessibility. FlowSense, her flagship venture, is the world’s first period detection device designed specifically to support women with visual impairments to independently manage their menstrual health. In October 2025 she was awarded the IET’s Mike Sargeant Medal.
Muna Daud won a Red Dot Design Concept Award this year!
The FlowSense
Where did the idea for FlowSense come from?
The idea for FlowSense emerged during Muna’s Master’s studies at Imperial College London. While she had developed a portfolio of concepts, FlowSense stood out as a project she knew she had to continue with after university.
The inspiration came from learning about the challenges visually impaired women face when managing their menstrual health, addressing a critical healthcare gap for 139 million visually impaired women globally. From research, she discovered that menstrual blood has a different pH to other vaginal fluids, which led to the core technical insight behind FlowSense.
How FlowSense is evolving?
Muna partnered with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to engage visually impaired women in testing early prototypes. Initial designs used a biodegradable polymer, chitosan, integrated into sanitary pads to provide a tactile signal in response to pH changes.
Muna says that engaging with users was invaluable. Feedback enabled her to continue developing technology and enhance the user experience, “By combining the original pH testing pad idea with technology,” says Muna, “I’m now working on a device that not only expands on the technology out there for menstrual health, but also widens the support FlowSense can offer by having a cycle tracking app connected to the device.
Through prototyping, FlowSense has evolved into a holistic solution for menstrual health, combining hygiene, tracking, and vaginal health diagnostics, a true testament to how technology can empower women’s well-being."
“I am dedicated to bringing awareness to the lack of accessibility in women's healthcare. Our groundbreaking startup has pioneered a revolutionary method for menstrual blood detection and tracking for the visually impaired, empowering women globally to take ownership of their menstrual hygiene.
We want to create a society where every woman regardless of her abilities can confidently manage and gain autonomy over her menstrual hygiene and break down societal barriers.” Muna Daud.
