IET London: Savoy Place celebrates community inclusion through Pride in the Quarter public art trail
IET London: Savoy Place, an historic event venue and hub for engineering and technology in the heart of the capital, has sponsored a striking lion sculpture as part of Westminster’s Pride in the Quarter public art trail this Summer, celebrating community inclusion and cultural engagement.
17 artist-designed lion and lionesses sculptures delivered by London Heritage Quarter, transforming the streets of Westminster and Victoria into a free outdoor gallery from 1 June to 10 August. The trail invites residents, workers and visitors to explore the area, connect with its history and celebrate its diverse communities.
Created by artist Tasia Graham, the sculpture honours the life and achievements of Dr Sara Josephine Baker, a trailblazing physician whose work revolutionised child welfare and preventative healthcare in the twentieth century, particularly in maternal and infant health. The concept of the IET London: Savoy Place lion design centres on birth and renewal with flowing forms and floral elements representing growth and continuity.
The artwork also pays tribute to Baker’s lasting impact and her connection to underrepresented LGBTQ+ history, particularly her advocacy for women and immigrant communities.
Pride in the Quarter encourages people to engage with local culture through accessible and inclusive public art. By supporting the trail, IET London: Savoy Place is contributing towards making arts and cultural experiences more accessible to the public, while creating opportunities for people to connect with the stories and spaces that define central London.
The venue actively supports initiatives that promote inclusion, encourage community participation and celebrate diverse perspectives. Sponsorship of the campaign reflects these values, helping bring people together from all backgrounds through creativity and shared experiences.
Sean Spencer, Head of Venues at IET London: Savoy Place, said:
“At IET London: Savoy Place, we believe that our role truly extends beyond than just being a venue. We’re committed to playing a role in bringing our community together and we’re proud to support an important initiative like Pride in the Quarter that help celebrate diversity, inspire and connect people with the heritage and art that shape central London.”
Anne Locker, Archivist at IET London: Savoy Place said:
“Dr. Sara Josephine Baker was a remarkable STEM pioneer whose work transformed urban public health, yet her story is not well known. It’s wonderful to see her legacy celebrated in an artistic way that encourages people to learn and engage with forgotten histories.”
