Government AI roll-outs threatened by outdated IT systems
Commenting on the Committee’s report, Stephanie Baxter, Head of Policy at the IET, said:
“The IET welcomes the Public Accounts Committee’s report and shares its concerns around lack of information and confidence in implementing AI across the public sector.
“Government has begun to experience an AI revolution, where AI capabilities increase the potential for efficiency gains. However, AI, in all its encompassing forms, is not infallible and must be applied diligently and appropriately.
“An IET survey on the use of AI found that nearly a third of those surveyed had concerns over the lack of information around AI and lack of skills and confidence to use the technology, with over a quarter of people saying they wished there was more information about how it works and how to use it. “That is why, when considering AI for government use, it is imperative that there are strong and secure data foundations, appropriate skills training to ensure competency, and full transparency. If the government shows a successful use of AI, it will enhance the national public trust and encourage wider adoption of AI, boosting innovation and growth across the whole economy.”
