Hydrogen blending into the GB gas transmission network consultation
The IET has responded to an open consultation from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
The consultation aims to assess the potential strategic and economic value of blending hydrogen into the existing GB gas transmission network. It investigates the commercial, market, technical and billing arrangements that would be needed to accommodate hydrogen blending into gas transmission networks, should blending be supported and enabled by government.
The IET’s response, informed by our members expertise, outlines key barriers and opportunities for hydrogen blending into gas transmission networks, whilst maintain a holistic view of the clean power energy transition.
In this paper, the IET recommends that government:
- Provide explicit clarity in its definitions of blending.
- Identify the maximum safe blending percentage that can be achieved without requiring modifications to end-user equipment.
- Continue cooperation with European partners and alignment with their blending standards.
- Align commercial and locational incentives for hydrogen production with long-term network and decarbonisation objectives.
In partnership with Cranfield University the IET are developing a birds-eye view assessment of the state of UK Hydrogen and the supply chain.
