Dr Tony Luija Chen is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal for pioneering the retrofilling of high-voltage gas-insulated assets with environmentally friendly alternatives to sulfurhexafluoride (SF6), enabling significant decarbonisation of the UK’s electricity network. His work offers a practical, scalable solution that reduces emissions and costs, now adopted as standard practice by National Grid.
He is a Reader in High Voltage Engineering at the University of Manchester.

Dr. Qing-Chang Zhong DIC FIET FIEEE FAAAS is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal for his field-defining contribution by creating the Synchronised-and-Democratised architecture and Virtual Synchronous Machine technologies: a unifying foundation for power-electronics-enabled autonomous power.
He is a Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology and Founder and CEO of Syndem LLC.
Kasai Mbo
Kasai Mbo is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal for engineering the world's first stable, four-season thermally conductive backfill material composed entirely of 100% UK waste materials. This record-breaking achievement addresses a critical infrastructure challenge for buried cable networks and renewable energy systems, delivering unprecedented longevity and sustainability simultaneously.

Kin K Leung FREng FIET FIEEE
Kin K Leung FREng FIET FIEEE is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal. He is internationally renowned for his contributions in communication network technologies, ranging from network queuing models, wireless-network protocols and network tomography. These have led to improvements and new capabilities of nationwide communication networks for civilian and defence applications in the US and the UK.
He is the Tanaka Chair Professor at Imperial College.
Professor Shichang Gao
Professor Shichang Gao is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal for his contribution to the development of antennas onboard NovaSAR-S remote-sensing Satellite. His antenna designs are used in several space missions such as UK’s TechDemoSat-1 satellite, DoT-1 satellite, NASA’s CYGNSS satellite, NASA's NISAR Space Mission and the European Space Agency's Rose-L Space Mission.
He is a Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Sanjit Kumar Mitra MNAE MAE FINAE FNASI
Sanjit Kumar Mitra MNAE MAE FINAE FNASI is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal for his seminal contributions to the theory and practice of digital signal processing. His work established signal processing as foundational to communications, imaging, multimedia, and intelligent systems.
He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California Santa Barbara.
Xiangjun Li CEng FIET FIEEE
Xiangjun Li CEng FIET FIEEE is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal for his contribution to achieving multi-objective control of grid battery energy storage system with wind and photovoltaic power generations. He led the development of the world’s first large-scale wind-solar-storage energy management system.
He is Director of Energy Storage Operation Technology Research Lab at China Electric Power Research Institute.
Xin Tu PhD SMIEEE
Xin Tu PhD SMIEEE is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal for his groundbreaking contributions to plasma science and engineering. He pioneered the Shielding Protection sorption-enhanced catalyst design strategy for plasma-catalytic ammonia synthesis, overcoming major efficiency limitations by suppressing the reverse reaction.
He is a Professor and Chair in Plasma Catalysis at the University of Liverpool.
Zhao Li FIET
Zhao Li FIET is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal for creating the world's first edge-cloud large-scale lithium battery model, achieving 98% anomaly detection and 97.6% capacity-estimation accuracy. This invention protects millions of daily e-bike riders from battery fires while reducing carbon emissions by 70,000 tons annually in China.
He is a Professor at Zhejiang University and Chief Technology Officer at Hangzhou Yugu Technology.
IET Volunteer Medal shortlist
Dr Jolly Wong MSc MPhil DProf CEng ChCSP FIET CITP FBCS
Dr Jolly Wong MSc MPhil DProf CEng ChCSP FIET CITP FBCS is shortlisted for the IET Volunteer Medal for outstanding contributions to the IET. He is an IET Professional Registration Assessor and International Professional Registration Advisor. In this role, Dr Wong mentors, interviews and assesses candidates. He also contributions to accreditation and standards.
A former IET Vice President and Trustee, he continues to champion professionalism and mentor engineers, encouraging innovation and ethical practice in fields such as AI, cybersecurity and critical communications.
John Lorriman
John Lorriman is shortlisted for the IET Volunteer Medal for his continued dedication to volunteering since joining in 1970. His recognised work in CPD and engineering education took him to regions such as Hong Kong and Malaysia. He also played a key role in developing what has become the global IET Mentoring Service.
John continues to volunteer actively today, serving on the Coventry and Warwickshire Network, carrying out Professional Review Interviews, accrediting Professional Development Schemes, and contributing to the Professional Development Operations Committee and promoting Career Manager to the wider engineering community.
Mike Sargeant Medal shortlist
Dr Christine Enowmbi Tambe MEng AMIChemE
Dr Christine Enowmbi Tambe MEng AMIChemE is shortlisted for the Mike Sargeant Medal. Christine developed a patent-pending electrochemical process to recover high-purity copper from electronic waste using a recyclable, hydrogen-based solution, eliminating carbon-intensive smelting. With the UK lacking a domestic copper refinery yet being a top importer, this innovation strengthens supply chain security and anchors a low-carbon industrial backbone for the energy transition.
She is a Senior Electrochemical Engineer at Carbon Capture Machine (UK) Ltd.
Dr Luping Xiang
Dr Luping Xiang is shortlisted for the Mike Sargeant Medal. He addresses bottlenecks in wireless systems. In 5G New Radio Polar decoding, his work reduced average decoding complexity by 50% while achieving latency only 21% of the state-of-the-art benchmark, without sacrificing error-correction performance. He has since extended the same engineering philosophy into frontier 6G research, moving from bit-level transmission towards intelligent, task-oriented and sensing-aware wireless systems.
He is an assistant professor at Nanjing University.
Sir Henry Royce Medal shortlist
Dr Halvin H. Yang PhD MIET MIEEE
Dr Halvin H. Yang PhD MIET MIEEE is shortlisted for the Sir Henry Royce Medal for pioneering the use of large language models to model complex fluid antenna communication channels, achieving over 300% performance gains compared to existing methods. This breakthrough establishes a new AI-driven paradigm for wireless system design, enabling accurate prediction in scenarios previously considered analytically intractable.
He is a research associate at Imperial College London.
Muhammad Yaruk Khan MIET
Muhammad Yaruk Khan MIET is shortlisted for the Sir Henry Royce Medal for contributing to the delivery of the UK Power Networks Little Horsted Substation using SF6-free Gas Insulated Switchgear technology between 2023 and 2026. This project directly supported the decarbonisation of electrical grid infrastructure by eliminating one of the most harmful greenhouse gases in industrial use, combining technical excellence with real environmental impact.

Yazan Haidar MIET is shortlisted for the Sir Henry Royce Medal for establishing an award-winning pre-surgical simulation workflow at NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, producing patient-specific 3D-printed anatomical models that allow orthopaedic, ENT, and paediatric cardiology teams to rehearse complex procedures before theatre — cutting operative time, improving surgical accuracy, and reducing risk for the most vulnerable NHS patients.
