Railway earthing and bonding technical training course

Requirements for integration of AC electrified railways

About the technical training course

Take part in expert training in railway earthing and bonding. This technical course is based on the IET guidance in railway earthing and bonding for AC electrified railways.

Railway systems interface directly with people, so making sure that an electrified site is properly earthed and bonded is critical to eliminating any potential safety issues, protecting equipment and reducing expensive downtime.

Railway earthing and bonding will provide insights into the fundamental requirements and design principles of AC electrified railways across core railway engineering disciplines, helping you to broaden your knowledge and experience within this complex area of engineering.

If you’re interested in attending a future earthing and bonding technical course, please register your interest to be kept up to date with future dates.

Key learning objectives

  • Analyse and evaluate safety requirements and risks associated with AC electrification systems as outlined in standards like BS EN 50122-1: BS EN 50522 and IEC 61140
  • Apply theoretical knowledge of electrification, bonding and earthing principles through practical workshop exercises to analyse real-world interfaces, operations and asset configurations in AC and DC railway systems
  • Evaluate design considerations such as OLE clearances, structure bonding, and interface management to effectively mitigate risks from factoring such as earth faults, lightning, and dual voltages electrification systems
  • Integrate knowledge of AC system design, operation and safety regulations through hands-on workshop activities.

Don't just take our word for it…

"This course has really helped me to fill the gaps and understand the earthing and bonding requirement. Highly recommended if you are connected to the rail industry."

"Very good training course with a variety of knowledgeable speakers from different fields and areas. Overall, well organised and great facilities on site at the IET building."

"I enjoyed an extremely informative two days and found the case studies very inspiring. I don’t believe we ever get to a point where we cannot learn something new or deepen our understanding of system design."

"An excellent course delivered by leaders in the earthing and bonding rail industry. A must for anyone working in the electrification of railway systems either within the UK or abroad."

"This is a really good technical course (for people) who want to learn and fill their gaps in understanding of earthing and bonding. Highly recommended."
