Please note: Career Mentoring is currently only available to TMIET (Technician) members while we grow our volunteer mentor community. This is included as part of your IET membership at no additional cost.

What is Career Mentoring?
Career Mentoring is a structured, supportive relationship where you lead the journey, and your mentor helps you move towards your development goals. Together, you’ll explore challenges, uncover opportunities and shape a plan that works for you both.
Your mentoring relationship is designed to support you through your current goals, with regular conversations to keep your progress on track.

About the IET mentoring agreement
The IET mentoring programme is built on mutual respect, professionalism and commitment. The Career Mentoring agreement explains what mentors and mentees can expect from one another and helps establish a strong foundation for successful mentoring partnerships.

- Why is Career Mentoring only available to TMIET members?

The programme is currently available exclusively to Technician (TMIET) members as we build our network of volunteer mentors.
We chose to launch with Technician members because they are typically at an early stage in their engineering careers, where mentoring can have the greatest impact on professional development and career progression.
- How are mentors selected?

Our mentors are experienced engineering and technology professionals who volunteer their time to support the development of others.
Mentees can review mentor profiles and choose the mentor they believe is best suited to their objectives and career aspirations.
- How often will I meet with my mentor?

The frequency and duration of meetings will be agreed between you and your mentor at the start of the relationship.
You'll decide together what level of contact is most helpful for achieving your goals.
- How long does a mentoring relationship last?

The length of the mentoring relationship will be agreed by you and your mentor. This may vary depending on your goals and development needs.
The relationship should include regular reviews to assess progress and ensure it continues to be valuable for both parties.
- What happens during the first mentoring session?

The first session is an opportunity to get to know each other, discuss your goals and define what success looks like.
You and your mentor will also agree how you will work together, including expectations, communication methods and how progress will be reviewed.
- How will I measure my progress?

Many mentoring relationships use SMART goals to help track progress, maintain focus and celebrate achievements along the way.
- Is mentoring confidential?

Yes. Mentors and mentees should agree on confidentiality expectations at the start of the relationship to help create an open and trusting environment for discussions.
- How do we communicate?

All mentoring communication and meetings should take place through the IET mentoring platform. This helps maintain professional boundaries and ensures interactions align with the IET Rules of Conduct and Volunteer Code.
- What if my mentoring relationship isn't working?

Regular review points should be built into the relationship to discuss what is working well and whether any changes are needed.
Mentors and mentees should openly discuss challenges and agree how concerns will be addressed.
A clear process for ending the relationship should also be agreed at the start.
