The training and support provided through AECOM’s GDP helps graduates develop the required skills, knowledge and professional qualifications to help them deliver client projects to the very highest standards.
From day one, graduates at AECOM also benefit from the opportunity to apply theory studied at university to real life projects. This practical experience allows them to work across a range of different schemes, build client relationships and understand the role they play in successful project delivery. They also benefit from the experience of those around them.
A focus on working towards professional registration
The programme provides employees with support and guidance to help them work towards their professional qualifications. Every graduate is assigned a mentor to guide them through this process, and the company also funds the cost of membership for each graduate’s chosen professional institution.
Graduates also receive training on a number of different activities to help them develop skills outside their day job. These sessions include time management, negotiation skills and presentation skills and employees can attend talks delivered by senior AECOM’s staff as well as detailed training sessions on the business’ systems, processes and commercial strategies.
What AECOM looks for in a graduate
“We look for evidence of relevant work experience, enthusiasm and drive, as well as the quality of answers to assessment questions,” highlight’s AECOM’s European Graduate Development Consultant. “More and more students are applying with at least one or two periods of relevant work experience. As well as showing motivation and drive, it also provides graduates with a greater understanding of the work environment, which can be a huge benefit to their application.
“Technical competency is obviously key, but we want well-rounded graduates so we are also looking for their ability to influence, make decisions, work in teams and communicate effectively at all levels,” they add.
