New technologies could unlock the transport challenges we are facing. Silent aircraft could increase capacity at airports without the need for runway expansions and lightweight materials will make our vehicles faster, more fuel efficient, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and protecting the environment.

A free Local Authorities and Smarter Traffic Management Day from the Department for Transport in collaboration with the IET, Innovate UK, ITS-UK, the Transport Systems Catapult and the Transport Technology Forum took place at IET Birmingham: Austin Court on 28 November 2017
This case study, written by Rolls Royce for the IET, outlines the advanced technology which will go into building the RRS Sir David Attenborough. When built the boat will be one of the most advance research vessels ever enabling environmental scientists to conduct cutting edge research in the harshest environments where they can be a sea for weeks or even months at a time.
