S909 - Shetland Northern Isles New Energy Solutions (NINES) Project

Consultation on the Shetland Northern Isles New Energy Solutions (NINES) Project: IET comments to the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM).

Abstract The IET is pleased to endorse the proposal to go ahead with the NINES project and is strongly in favour of it as a demonstrator for smart grid technologies. However, the estimation of potential cost saving is less clear cut because other factors are changing. The provision of a high voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector in the future would reduce the load factor of the diesel generation to low levels, resulting in fuel savings. There are also other emerging fuelling options for island generators. It will require complex analysis to clearly identify which elements actually generate any cost savings and to what level of contribution.
