ADHD case study 2

An engineers story of their diagnosis for ADHD and how their workplace has understood their neurodiversity.

Please share your neurodiversity – diagnosed or undiagnosed, and the area of engineering or technology that you work in e.g. civil engineering.

I work in Civil engineering as a water engineer and was diagnosed with combined type ADHD in December 2021.

What behaviours or processes do work well for you in the workplace?

I am organised and a good communicator. I like order and structure and enjoy working in teams.

What behaviours or processes do not work well for you in the workplace?

I struggle with state management and focussing mostly. I also struggle with maintaining motivation throughout the day.

What tasks do you excel in?

I excel in communicating and helping others. I am kind and compassionate and work well on project management and organisation.

What workplace adjustments have been made to support you? If none, do you know of any that could support you?

My team have been very supportive of my neurodiversity. They have provided noise-cancelling headphones and ADHD specific coaching. My line manager is always available when I need to speak or am struggling with anything.

What do you want employers and colleagues of neurodivergent colleagues to know about your neurodiversity?

I would like them to know that it is both a strength and a struggle at times. I would like people to know it’s okay to ask questions too. The more open conversations we have about these topics the better our understanding will get.

We’re upgrading our contact centre to make it quicker and easier for you to speak to the right member of our team.

From Thursday, 30 to  Friday, 31 October, our phone lines will be temporarily unavailable while we upgrade our systems. For any urgent enquiries during this time, please email membership@theiet.org and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

From Monday, 3 November, we’re moving to one central phone number for all enquiries - which will be 0333 049 9123. This change will make it easier to reach the right team quickly and improve your experience.

Thank you for your patience as we improve how we connect with you.
