Our major activities

We celebrated our 150th anniversary from October 2020 - September 2021, and it was certainly a year to remember!

From inspirational talks and competitions to awards and unlikely partnerships – we commemorated our rich history and the impact engineering and technology have on the world around us through a variety of celebrations with international members, volunteers, partners and friends.

It was also a fantastic opportunity to take STEM beyond our normal communities; sharing the possibilities it can offer with wider society and changing the narrative on what being an engineer really means. Check out what took place and the legacy activities still to come below.

The IET 150: My Sustainable Community Competition

In partnership with Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) we launched a special competition for our 150th anniversary, open to young people across the UK, called My Sustainable Community.

We wanted to help young people discover how engineering and technology can be key in providing solutions to some of the planet’s largest challenges, all while having fun!

The IET @ Expo 2020 Dubai

We were thrilled to be a part this World Expo, featuring an adaptation of our ’100 engineering ideas that changed the world’ exhibition within the UK Pavilion.

The IET / Fashion District Manufacturing Futures Prize

Engineering is behind everything we touch and use – even the clothes we wear.

We worked with Fashion District to support technological SMEs who were working to solve the manufacturing challenges facing our industry.

The IET/Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Prize

Have you ever noticed that engineers don’t feature in many stories?

We want to change that, so we ran a story competition with just one rule – the central character must be a Difference Maker who is engineering a better world.

A once in a lifetime award for individuals and groups who are enigmatic engineering role models – making a real difference to our world.
