We offer a range of membership categories, each with specific criteria based on your qualifications and experience.
The information below provides a general overview; however, please note that all applications are reviewed individually to ensure the most appropriate membership level is offered.
IET membership category criteria
| Membership category | Designatory letters | General qualification benchmark (typical) | Experience and responsibility (typical) | 
| Student | N/A | Enrolled in an engineering or technology-related program/STEM related (e.g., degree, apprenticeship) | Undergoing a program of study leading to qualifications for Professional Registration. | 
| Associate | N/A | No formal engineering qualifications are needed. | Has a passion for engineering and technology. | 
| Member (TMIET) | TMIET (Technician Member) | UK Foundation degree, NVQ/SVQ Level 4/5, HND/HNC in an appropriate subject, City & Guilds 236 or similar, Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ESC) Gold/Black Card. | Professionally engaged in technology fields, demonstrating competence through education and/or experience. Often aligned with Engineering Technician (EngTech) responsibilities. | 
| Member (MIET) | MIET (Member) | Bachelor's degree (Pass/Ordinary/Honours), BEng (Hons), MEng, MSc, PhD in an appropriate subject. Postgraduate diploma, professional qualification, or other relevant Honours/higher degrees. | Professional engineers and graduate professionals engaged in technology fields, or established professionals with knowledge based on experience, working at a graduate level. | 
Key considerations:
- Supporters: For some applications, you will need a supporter (e.g., another IET member, your employer, a colleague who knows your work) to endorse your application.
