Each year has a checklist of activities that you can tick off as you progress with your apprenticeship. Don’t forget to record what you get up to as part of your competence development.
Year one: identity
Development
- Register on MyIET, add your contact details and set up your interests to make sure you get the most relevant news and updates.
- Create your action plan for the academic part of your apprenticeship. Think about what you need to work on most and see how we can help.
Knowledge
- You’ll automatically receive your free copy of the award-winning E+T magazine - sign up to the E+T daily newsletter in MyIET to keep up to date with all the latest industry developments.
- Check out IET.tv and watch a few Prestige Lectures.
Community
- Sign up for IET EngX - your go-to place for practical advice, information and networking to help you in your career.
- Join an IET Engineering Community or two and swap ideas with other apprentices.
Year two: awareness
Development
- Update your competences on Career Manager, making sure you add in any training and courses you’ve attended.
- Apply for an IET mentor or pair up with an in-company mentor. They’ll give you extra support and help you focus on your CPD.
Knowledge
- Try using the IET virtual library or factfiles for one of your apprenticeship assignments.
- Build up a list of go-to resources for non-standard problems. E+T and IET.tv are great places to start.
Community
- Build your network and meet up with other apprentices in your local IET Community.
Year three: support
Development
- Get serious about your Professional Registration application. Make sure your competence development is up to date on Career Manager and record your experience working on practical projects such as reliability maintenance, fault finding and problem-solving.
- Take a training course or join a Professional Registration webinar.
Knowledge
- Attend or watch an IET.tv, talk or seminar in your field to find out about the latest techniques and practices.
Community
Year four: progression
Development
- Use our knowledge resources to research and resolve a fault from start to finish without support then add it to your professional development plan on Career Manager.
- Start applying for Professional Registration as an EngTech or ICTTech.
Knowledge
- Look back and report on how you’ve used the IET during your apprenticeship and how you could support new apprentices in your company.
- See if our digital product packs like the digital Wiring Regulations could help progress your career.
Community
- Organise an event or site visit for your local Community. Or attend a life skills course.
Become an ambassador or consider volunteering at your company and promote apprenticeships and careers in engineering and technology by visiting schools and helping at events.
