All-girls team storms international robotics final to be named world champions
An all-girls team from Bracknell has beaten 96 teams from 11 countries to be named International Champions of the global robotics competition FIRST® LEGO® League, which took place in the United States at the weekend.
The RealTech Bots, a team of students led by parent coaches, emerged as the winning team at the FIRST® LEGO® League International Open, held on Saturday at the prestigious Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. The team included Tasnim Meliani age 14, Fatema Shaikh age 15, Zara Rashid age 14, Shriya Suvarna age 14, Sarah Meliani age 9 and Snigdha Suvarna age 12.

This year’s competition theme, SUBMERGED℠, invited teams to dive into the fascinating world of ocean exploration, marine life, and the effects of human activity. FIRST® LEGO® League uses the familiar and creative world of LEGO® to inspire students aged 6-16 to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) through engaging, hands-on challenges. The team’s innovative project tackled the pressing issue of water pollution and pH changes, showcasing a collaborative solution designed to make a real-world impact.
They produced the PH Wanderer – a low-cost, autonomous, solar powered PH monitoring system that provides real time measurement to a central monitoring location wirelessly. The solution helps address the issue of ocean acidification, a process that threatens marine life and entire coral reefs.
Sellami Meliani, the team’s coach, said: “Winning a world title is an incredible reward, but for me, the most rewarding part has been the journey and the impact FIRST® LEGO® League has had on the students. Watching this team grow over four years, developing confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience, and still finding the energy and motivation to return, improve, and give it their all each season has been truly inspiring.”
Another winning team included Yorkshire’s Incredilegos, from Bradford Grammar School, who were awarded second place in the Innovation Finalist Award.
Hannah Rees, Senior Education Manager for FIRST® LEGO® League UK & Ireland said: “The standard of performance at this year’s international competition has been nothing short of exceptional. I’m incredibly proud that two UK teams have earned prestigious awards on the global stage.
“We’ve seen remarkable growth, confidence, and skill development from all participants – especially from Incredilegos, who triumphed at the UK final in Harrogate and went on to represent us at the Florida International Open.
“I’m thrilled that all-girls team RealTechBots not only competed against 96 teams from 11 countries but also won the coveted Champions Award. Their success sends a powerful message to young women everywhere: you belong in STEM.
“Their creativity, teamwork, and innovation truly embody the spirit of FIRST® LEGO® League. This program is about so much more than robotics – it’s about empowering young people with critical STEM skills, fostering collaboration, and nurturing the next generation of problem-solvers and leaders.
“This victory is a testament to the incredible talent, passion, and dedication of our young engineers here in the UK.”
The IET is proud to be the FIRST® LEGO® League’s UK and All-Ireland operational partner.
