The business case for engineering in health and safety
This paper highlights the essential and growing role of engineering in supporting health and safety risk management and economic sustainability, listing some key steps for engineers, managers and government to consider. The business case for health and safety engineering solutions is outlined, providing real-life examples of many engineering-related successes and failures. This is supported by an explanation of how and why the case needs to be made more strongly.

Life-long learning for Health and Safety Risk Management
This document provides a schedule of guidance describing in broad terms the continued health and safety risk assessment and mitigation learning that is likely to be required as part of a professional’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Safety, Health and Environmental Risk
The teaching of safety, health and environmental risk (SHE) issues to undergraduates studying engineering courses is an important part of the education of future engineers and is generally thought to be an area insufficiently covered in current courses
Safety, Health and Environmental Risk
The group is currently working on three key areas of interest to the Institutions and has created working groups made up of experts from industry and academia to tackle these important issues:
Risk teaching
Promote the teaching of health and safety risk to undergraduate engineers in the UK through the provision of flexible teaching materials that could be incorporated into engineering courses.
The group is working with the Health and Safety Executive to produce a software package that will demonstrate their e-learning concept. A report outlining the proposals has been published by the Health & Safety Executive.
Occupational health
To increase the understanding of occupational health issues within the engineering profession.
Members of this working group include occupational health experts from the medical profession.
The working group has produced the following:
Safety culture
Promoting the benefits of a good safety culture within companies and organisations. The group helped to set up an event on safety culture that was run by the Hazards Forum. Please read the following report (reproduced by kind permission of the Hazards Forum).
