Event recap: workshop on policy engagement

Given the increasing links between research funding and government policy, it is ever more important that the Computing Science Research and Education Communities engage with Westminster and regional governments. 

This event on 15 January 2021 explained the links between policy and UKRI funding, provided the first-hand experience of engagement from Chief Scientific Advisors and provided a practical exercise in responding to requests for input in parliamentary and policy consultations.

The event began with an introduction by Jane Hillston, UKCRC Chair and the University of Edinburgh, and Edmund Robinson, Queen Mary University of London. They discussed the importance of getting involved in this kind of work.

It was followed by James Dracott sharing the links between UKRI and Policy, and Chris Johnson, Queen’s University Belfast, looking at the mechanics of consultations and how it relates to Parliamentary Committees.

After a short break, Alastair Irons, BCS, shared an update on the role of the BCS Academy, and Sarah Main, Executive Director, Campaign for Science and Engineering, CaSE, looked at the landscape of influencing. The event was closed by Chris Hankin, Imperial College London, and Anthony Finkelstein, CSA for National Security.
