IET Achievement Medals 2025 winners

Faraday Medal winner

Professor Martin A Green AM FRS FAA FTS MNAE

Professor Martin A Green AM FRS FAA FTS MNAE is awarded the 101st Faraday Medal for his significant contributions to solar energy research, particularly the development of high efficiency silicon solar cells. 

His group’s contributions to photovoltaics include conception and first demonstration of both PERC and TOPCon solar cells, which now account for over 90% of global production and for most of the solar installed in the field. His team has held the record for silicon cell energy conversion efficiency for 3 of the last 4 decades, regarded as a Top Ten milestone in solar photovoltaics history. Through his efforts making low-cost solar a practical reality, he has been credited with having done “more to help ward off impending climate catastrophe than any other single person”.

He is a Scientia Professor and the Founding Director of the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics, at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

Mountbatten Medal winner

Professor Steve Hodges BSc PhD FIET FIEEE

Professor Steve Hodges BSc PhD FIET FIEEE is awarded the Mountbatten Medal for developing and promoting opportunities for children to engage with technology via physical computing, and for outstanding contributions to the BBC micro:bit hardware design.

Steve has dedicated much of his career to building, studying and promoting technologies that let children create physical computing systems that sense and respond to the physical world. His contributions to the BBC micro:bit initiative have helped over sixty million students around the world engage with and learn about information technology and coding.

Steve is a Distinguished Professor at Lancaster University where he is also Director of Engagement for the School of Computing and Communications.

JJ Thomson Medal winner

Professor Nasir Ahmed

Professor Nasir Ahmed is awarded the JJ Thomson Medal for his invention of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). DCT has enabled the development of digital media compression and served as the basis of numerous international standards. These standards and compression formats are used by billions of people to store and transmit digital images, audio, sound and video. His algorithm is used for compression in every .jpeg file. With an average file size reduction of 90% his algorithm paved the way for the early internet. About 4 billion people depend on and benefit from DCT and its variants. He is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of New Mexico.

Professor David Flynn FRSE FRSA FHEA FIES PhD MSc BEng SMIEEE MIET

Professor David Flynn FRSE FRSA FHEA FIES PhD MSc BEng SMIEEE MIET is the winner of an IET Achievement Medal in Cyber Physical Systems for his work in pioneering cyber-physical architectures that integrate complex, adaptive energy, transport, and digital systems. He a Professor of Cyber Physical Systems at the University of Glasgow.

Professor Stefano Pirandola PhD

Professor Stefano Pirandola PhD is the winner of an IET Achievement Medal in Quantum Technology for establishing the ultimate communication rates for quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation, and entanglement distribution. His groundbreaking work set the theoretical limits for secure quantum communication. He is a Professor of Quantum Computing at the University of York.

Professor John A Rogers

Professor John A Rogers is the winner of an IET Achievement Medal in Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering for his pioneering work in soft, biocompatible electronic systems for medical applications. His innovations include bioresorbable intracranial pressure monitors and temporary pacemakers. He is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University.

Nick Wirth CEng FREng FIMechE

Nick Wirth CEng FREng FIMechE is a winner of an IET Achievement Medal in Sustainability and Climate Change for his work in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). He was the first engineer to design an F1 race car solely with CFD. His CFD technologies have saved British Retailers £46,000,000 in retail costs and 98,000 tonnes of C02. He is the founder and owner of Wirth Research.

IET Achievement Medal finalists

Professor Qammer H Abbasi CEng FRSE FEAI FIET is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal in Communications Engineering for his pioneering work in modern antennas which has driven next-generation wireless innovation. He is a Professor of Applied Electromagnetics and Sensing at James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. 

Roger Barrett SFIIRSM FISRM Eng Tech TIStructE FIEM MIoD is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal in Design Engineering for his outstanding work in the design and development of concert stages over the last 50 years. He developed the first purpose-built concert stages, and his stages continue to host some of the largest events in British concert history. He is the Technical Director at Star Live. 

Hugo Plácido da Silva PhD is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal in Biomedical Engineering for his seminal theoretical and practical contributions that led to the first industrially feasible device for reliable ECG-based biometrics using sensors integrated in daily use objects. He is a Senior Researcher and Thematic Line Coordinator at Instituto de Telecomunicações, and an Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon.    

Professor Liang Zhou FIET is shortlisted for an IET Achievement Medal in Communications for his outstanding contributions to wireless and multimedia communications, profoundly impacting both academia and engineering. He proposed the collaborative multimedia transmission theory, which fundamentally established the theoretical foundation for massive multimedia transmission. He is a professor at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. 

IET Volunteer Medal winner

Teck Lee Tan MIET

Teck Lee Tan MIET is the winner of the IET Volunteer Medal. Teck Lee has served as Chair of the IET Singapore Network Power and Energy Section of IET Singapore Local Network, and as Chair of the IET Singapore Network. In 2024 he organised 30 impactful technical events which addressed the societal challenges aligned with the IET’s mission to engineer a better world. He has also played a vital role in extending IET Singapore’s outreach, establishing collaborations with key engineering institutions and academic partners.

IET Volunteer Medal finalist

Dr Kalyan Sagar Kadali MIET MEng PhD is shortlisted for the IET Volunteer Medal. He has played a pivotal role in expanding the reach of the IET into many remote areas as the Chair of the Hyderabad Local Network. He strengthened the presence of the IET and allowed engineering students from remote regions the opportunity to connect with the IET. He was a member of Council and was appointed to the Communities Committee South Asia in 2024.  

Mike Sargeant Medal winner

Muna Daud

Muna Daud is the winner of the Mike Sargeant Medal for her outstanding invention FlowSense, the world’s first patented period detection product empowering visually impaired women. She is the visionary founder and CEO of FlowSense, which was named one of the Top 10 Startups of 2023 by UK Startup Magazine.

Mike Sargeant Medal finalists

Anirban Chatterjee MS is shortlisted for the Mike Sargeant Medal. Anirban was the module architect of the revolutionary electro-cardiogram (ECG) sensor on Apple Watch, where his patented invention enabled user-initiated ECG recordings. He is a hardware development lead in Apple’s Health Technologies group. 

Matej Poliaček MSc MIET is shortlisted for the Mike Sargeant Career Achievement Award for his contribution to multiple successful human spaceflight missions and utilising his role at the German Space Agency (DLR) to conduct further research and testing during his analogue missions. He is Flight Director for European Space Agency’s (ESA) Columbus module on the International Space Station. 

Sir Henry Royce Medal winner

EUR ING Ir Dr Andrew Ng Kay Lup CEng CSci IntPE

EUR ING Ir Dr Andrew Ng Kay Lup CEng CSci IntPE is the winner of the Sir Henry Royce Medal for his invention of PyroGEL, a gel-based fire suppression agent which is highly effective in extinguishing lithium-ion battery fires and surpasses the conventional fire suppression agents. He is Chief Technology Officer at Pyrogen Group.

Sir Henry Royce Medal finalists

Micky Mukesh Chhabda BTech MIET is shortlisted for the Sir Henry Royce Medal for innovating a data storytelling framework that applies engineering principles to analytics. His methodology: combining data, visuals, and narrative, transforms analytics into a structured engineering discipline, now adopted by students and professionals globally to drive impactful, business-aligned decisions in technology and beyond. He is a manager at Analytics at Ipsos MMA. 

Oshadha Sandaruwan Ranaweera BSc Eng MSc Eng CEng MIET PMP is shortlisted for the Sir Henry Royce Medal for leading the development of PowerProx, a real-time operational-support platform monitoring over 15,000 critical power assets across Sri Lanka Telecom’s nationwide network. He is a Power Operations Engineer at Sri Lanka Telecom. 

Paul Fletcher Medal winner

Dr Junade Ali

Dr Junade Ali is the winner of the Paul Fletcher Medal. Passionate about public awareness of cybersecurity matters and helping the public protect themselves, he has made exceptional and ongoing contributions to the IET’s external communications and press office function.  He has supported the IET in cybersecurity campaigns which have been featured on BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, The Independent and The Times.
