Substation design and construction: from feasibility to energisation technical training course
Effective delivery of substations, stage by stage
September 2027 (dates TBC)
To book this as a group in-company course contact us to discuss your requirements.
About the training course
This is a stage-by-stage overview across the full substation lifecycle, not a deep dive into any single discipline — subjects such as protection and earthing are courses in their own right. This course gives you the working knowledge to know what good looks like, enabling an effective handover to the next project stakeholder.

Kevin Hann
Senior Technical Advisor and founder, Utilligence Ltd
Kevin has spent over 50 years building, commissioning and fixing high voltage power systems. What began as a small venture after leaving Seeboard/EDF (now UK Power Networks) has grown into Utilligence, a consultancy and engineering business with around 50 people working across the UK, Pacific and India.
He was recently Technical Director across a number of companies working in high voltage systems, solar generation and EV charging. But is now focusing on consultancy.
Key learning objectives
- Identify the key deliverables and decisions required at each stage of a substation project, from inception through to handover.
- Recognise the information a Client needs to provide at project inception to initiate a successful project.
- Understand the core technical building blocks of a substation — switchgear, transformers, earthing, civil works, and auxiliary supplies — at a working overview level.
- Understand the regulatory and duty-holder frameworks governing substation design and construction.
- Understand the transformer and equipment procurement process, including manufacturing oversight and inspection stages.
- Recognise the common causes of delay, cost overrun, and rework at each stage handover, and practices to mitigate these risks.
- Understand what "good" looks like at each stage, to enable an effective handover of information and responsibility to the next stakeholder in the project.
