Ten top tips for succeeding in interviews

  1. Dress smartly, even if the company has a casual culture.
  2. Arrive five to ten minutes early.
  3. Open with a smile and firm handshake.
  4. If you tend to clam up, keep a pad with notes, you might not even need them but knowing they’re to hand will calm you down.
  5. If you freeze and can't think of an answer, then take a sip of water, as this gives you a chance to calm down and think.
  6. Don’t waffle on. Keep to the topic, make your point and then stop.
  7. Never say anything negative about past employers.
  8. Have a well-researched answer about why you want to work for the company.
  9. Show that you’re open to learning new skills and adapting to the company culture.
  10. Ask questions. This shows that you’re interested and eager to learn more. You can ask for more information on what the role involves and what the first month on the job might be like.
