About this event

Dan MacFarlane, Construction Director on the Blackfriars project, will describe how the project team created a landmark rail station that is bright, modern and a key element of London’s travel infrastructure.

The new London Blackfriars is the only station in the UK to span a river, with entrances both sides of the river… the largest solar array in London producing 50% of the station’s electric power needs and the only solar bridge in the world…engineered by a cast of more than 1,200 staff working at height over water and busy river traffic…with a live electrified running through the centre-line of the worksite…and underground trains running below…at an important transport interchange used daily by thousands of passengers.

Many innovative construction and engineering techniques were employed, with 98% of waste recycled and diverted from landfill whilst more than 14,000 tonnes of materials were brought by river barge to avoid road congestion and pollution.

Working in partnership with key stakeholders has minimised client risk, protected critical paths within a demanding programme and minimised impact on live railway operations
