Ultra-broad bandwidth and low-loss GCPW-MS transitions on low-k substrates

The development of MOS transistors of submicron gate length with cut-off frequencies up to 200 GHz has lead to renewed interest in silicon technology for millimetre-waveband applications. However, realisation of high performance millimetre-wave circuits requires broad bandwidth transmission lines and transitions. Researchers in France have shown that by using low-permittivity substrates both the attenuation and the bandwidth of grounded coplanar waveguide-microstrip (GCPW-MS) transitions can be improved, producing ultra-broad bandwidths up to 77 GHz.
