Consultation on Reducing red tape: IET comments to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
Current regulation is piecemeal and deals with real or perceived market failures in specific parts of the sector. Objectives need to be clear, explicit and integrated. Policy linkages need to be recognised early on. DECC needs to equip itself to handle engineering issues with confidence in all aspects of its work. This requires not only senior figures working on key strategic issues, but also engineering expertise right through the organisation. Amongst many other benefits this will reduce the red tape of numerous consultations on matters of detail that should be decided by engineers in government.
