S807 - UK Renewable Energy Strategy

Description

Consultation on UK renewable energy strategy: IET comments to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

Abstract

The proposed approach is relatively incremental and is likely to set the UK on the right road, but moving too slowly. If the cost of falling short of the European Union (EU) targets is modest, this may be the right approach in economic terms. However, it will not sufficiently assist the global battle against predicted climate change unless equivalent or greater emissions reductions can be achieved in other markets. If the targets are to taken very seriously, must stronger leadership from government will be needed. It may also need some level of government intervention in underpinning developments to attract supplier interest.
