S1033 - National Infrastructure Commission 5G call for evidence

Description

National Infrastructure Commission 5G call for evidence: IET comments to the National Infrastructure Commission.

Abstract

5G telecommunications technology is at an early stage with primary research still under way. Additionally, in the complex and rapidly changing world of telecommunications, there is a relatively high degree of uncertainty about the nature and range of applications 5G will enable. However, there is consensus that UK internet traffic will grow dramatically across coming decades, with estimates of future demand for mobile data alone suggesting a 45-80 fold increase by 2030 (Ofcom).

The IET responded to the consultation addressing some of the questions posed as well as including additional questions that need to be addressed.  The consultation response included a summary of 12 recommendations which are included in the annex of the response document.

However, there is consensus that UK internet traffic will grow dramatically across coming decades, with estimates of future demand for mobile data alone suggesting a 45-80 fold increase by 2030 (Ofcom).

The IET Communications Policy Panel is planning to respond and is seeking the views of the membership.
