IET comments to Scottish Affairs Select Committee: The renewable energy sector in Scotland.
On 19 February 2016, written evidence from the Institution of Engineering and Technology was presented to the inquiry by the Scottish Affairs Committee in Westminster into the renewable energy sector in Scotland. The renewable energy sector is an important part of the Scottish economy and will become more so as the drive towards a low carbon economy continues. The sector is most developed in relation to the production of electricity from renewable sources. Huge investment is needed but energy is a volatile field. Price fluctuation, changes in the mix of power generation and shifting subsidy provision are all factors in this situation. The increased use of inter-connectors and changes to the design of the grid system will be necessary to facilitate large scale generation of electricity from renewable sources.
