Jeremy Watson

Director, Science & Technology, Arup and Professor of Engineering Systems at University College London. Jeremy Watson is responsible for Arup’s strategy for Science & Technology. Until November 2012, he was also Chief Scientific Advisor for the Department of Communities & Local Government (DCLG). Jeremy now has a 50% staff role as Professor in Engineering Sciences at UCL, where he also serves as a Vice-Dean. An engineer by training and practice, Jeremy has held research and technical management roles in industry and universities, plus voluntary service with BIS, research councils and HEFCE. His specialities include the creation of strategic research agendas, emerging technology identification, R&D and deployment, and innovation processes. Jeremy’s technical expertise includes sensors, control, and power electronics. Current research interests span renewable energy, control for energy efficiency and low carbon buildings. He also has a developing engagement in cross-domain research,

including how design, regulation and technology can influence the way people use energy.

Jeremy is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal

Society for the Arts. He is a Fellow of the IET and ICE, and a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Southampton and Sussex. Jeremy is a member of EPSRC Council, and a past board member of the Technology Strategy Board. He is a trustee of the Institute for Sustainability and the Ove Arup Foundation. Jeremy was awarded a CBE in the 2013 Birthday Honours for services to engineering.
