Institution of Mechanical Engineers and IET announce the temporary co-location of their HQs

08 October 2012

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (the IET) is in the final stages of a feasibility project for a comprehensive refurbishment of its London venue at Savoy Place. During the proposed refurbishment, the IET would require a temporary headquarters including member facilities, events, library and meetings between mid-2013 and mid-2015.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers would be pleased to provide this home for the IET in One Birdcage Walk, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ headquarters in central Westminster. This would enable the IET to retain a London presence and maintain its level of service to IET members. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers will be enhancing its facilities for members’ services.

The co-location in One Birdcage Walk will include shared Institution of Mechanical Engineers and IET library facilities, members’ business centre and a new lounge for members. The IET and Institution of Mechanical Engineers intend to maintain their current volume of meetings, lectures and events together at One Birdcage Walk.

Temporary co-location would also allow the two Institutions to pursue closer working on such activities as accreditation, government policy advice, education and events.

In a joint statement announcing this temporary co-location Institution of Mechanical Engineers President Professor Isobel Pollock and IET President Professor Andy Hopper said:
“Between us we represent some 250,000 professional engineers and technicians around the world. This temporary co-location is seen by both of our organisations as a major opportunity for our two leading engineering institutions to pursue closer working in the interests of the profession.”

Members of the IET and Institution of Mechanical Engineers can find further information and a Frequently Asked Questions section with full details about the potential co-location by logging into the IET or Institution of Mechanical Engineers websites.
