Evidence of knowledge and understanding

You are required to provide details of any science, engineering and technology qualifications that you have completed or are in the process of completing.

If you have one of the following qualifications: MEng, MSc, PhD, BEng, BSc, or a UK vocational qualification NVQ 5, NVQ 4 or CSCS/ECS Platinum Card, then it is deemed as sufficient evidence that you have achieved an acceptable standard of knowledge and understanding. Qualifications will be accepted only from establishments recognised by NARIC, the UK National Agency responsible for providing information and expert opinion on vocational, academic and professional skills and qualifications from around the world.

If you do not have one of these specific qualifications then you need to provide a copy of your CV which clearly details your present employment position, previous employment positions and any roles, responsibilities and other qualifications that are relevant to the interests of the IET. Please note that the IET reserves the right to request a detailed CV from any applicant.

An assessment is then made by a specially trained member of staff.  Please see the qualifications and experience that the trained member of staff would search for in a CV to show if you have achieved a suitable level of knowledge and experience.

Evidence of suitability

You are required to provide details of a supporter who, if contacted by the IET, would be able to confirm that you have achieved the required knowledge and understanding for MIET. This does not apply to you if you are a former student member of the IET.  However, if this is the case then you must submit copies of your certificates to show that you have completed your qualifications.

Your supporter can be your employer, a member of the IET, or someone that knows you in a work capacity.  If you cannot find a suitable person to support your application e.g. if you are self employed, then you can contact the IET and request to be put in touch with your local advisor who will guide you on the best way to proceed.

The IET contacts a proportion of all supporters.  However, if your supporter is a member with the designatory letters FIET, MIET or TMIET then the IET makes the assumption that your supporter understands the criteria for designatory letters and so only contacts a small proportion of these supporters for further verification.  If your supporter is not a member with designatory letters then the IET will write to the supporter to explain the criteria for designatory letters and check that they do believe that you have achieved the required knowledge and understanding and are a suitable applicant to use the letters MIET after your name. If the IET contact your supporter it will await your supporter's response before they assess your application for designatory letters. In the interim you will be given membership without designatory letters. Please see the inquiry form sent to supporters.

If your supporter does not support your application, the IET will request additional supporter details from you.  If these are not supplied or if the information from the new supporter is not satisfactory then designatory letters will not be given or, in the case where they have already been awarded, will be removed from you.
