Member with designatory letters
Members with designatory letters are those who have achieved a standard of knowledge and understanding, as required by the Board of Trustees, and are engaged in an activity relevant to the interests of the IET.
If you have completed your studies and/or are currently employed then you may wish to apply to become a Member.
Professional technicians can apply to adopt the designatory letters TMIET.
Professional engineers can apply to adopt the designatory letters MIET.
TMIET
To be awarded the designatory letters TMIET you must satisfy the IET that you:
- Have achieved an acceptable standard of knowledge and understanding gained through education and/or experience
- Are professionally engaged in one of the many science, engineering or technology fields within the scope of the IET
- Have agreed to abide by the Royal Charter and Byelaws and the Code of Professional Conduct of the IET.
In addition, you must supply details of a supporter who can confirm that you are a suitable candidate to become a Member of the IET and use the letters TMIET after your name.

MIET
To be awarded the designatory letters MIET you must satisfy the IET that you:
- Have achieved an acceptable standard of knowledge and understanding gained through education and/or experience
- Are professionally engaged in one of the many science, engineering or technology fields within the scope of the IET
- Have agreed to abide by the Royal Charter and Byelaws and the Code of Professional Conduct of the IET.
In addition, you must supply details of a supporter who can confirm that you are a suitable candidate to become a Member of the IET and use the letters MIET after your name.
