How we use your personal data

The application process includes peer assessment by registered engineers who are IET members. These members are not IET staff, but volunteers who have been trained for this purpose.

Internal review

On receipt of your application for IEng, your application will be:

  • reviewed by staff;
  • reviewed by experienced and trained members.

They will consider whether or not you have provided sufficient evidence for your application to progress to a professional review interview. You will be advised if any further evidence is needed.

Your interview

All applicants for IEng professional registration will be interviewed. The interview is conducted by two members of the IET. You will discuss many aspects of your work which demonstrate your personal contribution and competence. At the start of the interview you will be asked to make a presentation lasting no more than 15 minutes and the overall interview will  last approximately one hour and 15 minutes. The interview confirms your overall level of competence as a professional engineer. The interviewers will ask you to expand on the information in your application.

Your interview can be held at various locations worldwide.  If you have special requirements, please let us know so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Decision

Successful applicants for IEng will receive a letter to confirm the decision together with notification of Engineering Council fees. Once your fee has been received, your name will be added to the Engineering Council register of professional engineers.

Should your application be unsuccessful you will receive a letter advising you about the additional experience or knowledge required. You will also be referred to a professional registration advisor who will be able to provide you with guidance and support. In some cases a different registration category may be recommended.
