Professional registration

Technician professional registration is a valuable, portable and internationally recognised qualification that can be carried through your career.

Technician registration is open to any individual employed in engineering and technology. The key to eligibility is demonstration of practical engineering/ICT experience and competence at the appropriate level. Individuals can apply to register with the Engineering Council by written application through the IET.

Professional technician registration is separated into three distinctions:

Engineering Technician (EngTech)

  • Engineering Technicians solve practical engineering problems. They are professionals with supervisory or technical responsibility, apply safe systems of working and contribute to:
  • the design;
  • development;
  • manufacture;
  • commissioning;
  • decommissioning;
  • operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes or services.

An IET registered professional engineering technician is entitled to use the letters TMIET EngTech after their name.

Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)

ICT technicians or practitioners work in areas such as:

  • ICT hardware, software or system installation;
  • operation;
  • maintenance;
  • incident/change/problem management;
  • administration;
  • security;
  • fault diagnosis and fixing.

They typically work in a range of jobs that involve supporting or facilitating the use of ICT equipment and applications by others and will be working in all fields of ICT.

An IET registered professional ICT Technician is entitled to use the letters TMIET ICTTech after their name.

Dual EngTech / ICTTech

Professionals engaged in solving technical problems and performing defined tasks in engineering as well as supporting or facilitating the use of ICT equipment and applications can make an application for dual professional registration. Dual registration requires one application and it is important to ensure that the examples you present of your work experience describe strong engineering knowledge and application to meet with both EngTech and ICTTech competence standards.

For a dual registration application form you will need to download either an EngTech or ICTTech application form and select both technician categories in the registration application section. You will be required to pay one assessment/application fee but will be required to pay two Engineering Council entrance fees for each category.

Apply for dual EngTech / ICTTech.
