IET Hong Kong hosts first ever Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards

The Guest of Honour was distinguished entrepreneur Dr Winnie Tang who gave a talk about Smart City Strategies in Hong Kong.

Dr Tang’s career spans over 20 years and she is one of the most respected female engineers and STEM role models in Hong Kong

The first-ever YWE Hong Kong Awards had two awards, an open category and a CEng category.

The five highly impressive finalists, Samantha Kong, Juan Lo, Winky Lui, Jaimi Siu and Melody Wong, all attended the event.

Our winner of the Open Category was Samantha Kong. She is a Senior Engineer, Sustainability at Ove Arup and Partners Hong Kong Ltd. Samantha has been delivering a variety of sustainability developments in Asia and the Middle East, including green building complexes, environmental planning and sustainable infrastructure projects. Samantha is also a column writer, an educator and a social entrepreneur. She founded Eldpathy Co. Limited, an award-winning social enterprise that recognises the importance of empathy for the elderly through the Elderly Stimulation Programme. She has been the recipient of various awards including the North American Association for Environmental Education 30 Under 30 in 2018.

Jaimi Siu was awarded Young Woman Engineer of the Year in our CEng category. Jaimi has been involved in a variety of roles and projects during her time working at CLPe solutions. As one of the CLP young engineers she supported their Engineer in School Programme by delivering school talks to educate and inspire young people. She is also part of their Mentoring Programme for female engineering students which aims to provide support.

Our three Merit Award winners, Juan Lo, Winky Lui and Melody Wong were also recognised for their outstanding contributions to women in engineering.

All of our winners and finalists are fantastic role models and strong advocates of women in STEM and do a lot of outreach work to help recruit and retain more women and girls in engineering.

Well done to our IET Hong Kong team and network of volunteers who made this special milestone event happen. We are proud to celebrate our 40-year legacy of Young Woman Engineer of the Year awards in Hong Kong now too.
