Exciting new collaborations to support our 150th anniversary

This was the first year it has been a solely virtual event, attracting an incredible international audience and discussing difference-makers of the past 150 years. If you missed it, you can catch it on-demand on IET.tv and on our YouTube channel.

However, the celebrations don’t stop there! Our focus this year is on reaching beyond our science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) community, celebrating unexpected collaborations with industries that people wouldn’t automatically associate with engineering and technology.

We’ve just launched an exciting new children’s fiction competition in partnership with The Times and Chicken House Books. We’re looking for budding unpublished and unagented authors who have what it takes to create a story for readers aged 7 to 18, which explores or celebrates STEM.

The IET 150 Award will be given for the best complete fiction manuscript with a worldwide publishing contract, a £10,000 advance and an offer of representation by a top literary agent up for grabs.

The competition will close on 1 February 2021 with the winner being announced in May 2021. For more details, please check out the IET@150 website.

We’ve also created a Manufacturing #DifferenceMaker challenge with the Fashion District and the University of the Arts in London. We’re looking for engineered solutions that will help to solve some of the manufacturing challenges faced by the fashion sector, especially around sustainability; whether that be finding more sustainable materials, upcycling or building technology into everyday clothing. The IET / Fashion District Manufacturing Futures Prize will officially launch in January 2021, so watch this space for updates.

Finally, our anniversary year gives us an opportunity to look back and reflect on some of the incredible achievements and #DifferenceMakers who have helped to shape our Institution and community. We’ve been exploring the archives for footage of notable moments and events over the decades, and we’ve compiled a short video of some of the best clips. Check it out on IET.tv.
