Single sign-on (SSO) is a robust, secure login system that will enable users to log into multiple IET web platforms through one, single login session and provides users with a more streamlined and secure login experience.
Users have the option of setting up an external service such as Google, Facebook or Volunteer Office 365 for their login, so they will not need a password with the IET.
Single sign-on enables you to log in to multiple IET web platforms through one central account.
When registering for single sign-on, you will need to demonstrate ownership of your registered email address by typing in a one-time passcode that will be generated for you.
The new single sign-on service will provide IET users with a choice of login options, which include the use of email or social (Office 365, Facebook and Google) accounts. In addition to this, members can opt-in for two-factor authentication, which will provide an additional layer of security associated with their IET accounts.
You will also have access to a new self-service portal, which will enable you to manage your email address, social login option, two-factor authentication and password. The new SSO service will provide users with seamless access to the IET family of sites, without the need for them to log in again in the same session.
In addition to our main iet.org and IET venues websites, you will also be able to use single sign-on to access other IET platforms including: IET Academy, ADAMS, Career Manager, the Digital Library, Electrical, Engineering Communities, Events, Faraday Primary and Secondary, IET.tv, Inspec Direct, the Professional Registration Review Process System (RPS) and UK CRC (UK Computing Research Committee).
Please note that certain IET systems used by volunteers including Adestra, Event webform, Plus! For Events, OpenWater and the Marketing toolkit are not currently included in the single sign-on service but will be explored in future developments.
The single sign-on system will mitigate against possible data breaches and improve account security. As this is a Microsoft service, it is an automatically evolving system, meaning that “behind the scenes” it will continually be updated with industry best practice.
Plus, if there is ever a data breach involving one of the social media accounts you use to log in, we have safeguards in place to temporarily halt this option as an account verifier.
The IET cannot see your password and we want to ensure that only current active users are migrated to the new system, which supports the single sign-on service. The migration process will be available until year-end 2019. All web users will be asked to migrate their accounts to the new platform before year end. By migrating your account before the end of this year, the migration process will be shorter.
Please follow these instructions to migrate your login details to the new single sign-on service:
- Click on "Migrate your account" on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Enter your existing username and password
- Click continue
- Type in the verification code that has been sent to your registered email address
- Click on submit code.
This is a one-time process when you first use the single sign-on system.
You’ll need to reset your password first before you can migrate your login details to the new single sign-on system. Please follow these instructions to reset your password:
- Click on ‘Migrate your account’ on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Click on Forgot your password.
- Please type in your registered email address. A link will be sent to your email for you to click to verify account ownership before you are able to reset your password
We recommend going to our website and clicking ‘Login’ at the top right-hand side of the screen. This will take you back to the single sign-on portal homepage.
If you’re an IET member, don’t worry. You can use the member registration process to create a new login linked to your membership with the same permissions. If you’re not an IET member, you will need to use the non-member registration process and this will create an entirely new account.
Also called multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-step authentication, two-factor authentication is an additional, opt-in service that we will be offering to members, which provides an extra layer of security for web users against cyber hacking and supports cyber security protocol. It means that when you log into your account, a one-time code is generated and sent to a mobile number of your choice to verify your user credentials.
I’d like to set up two-factor authentication, but I don’t have a mobile phone. Does this mean I can’t set this up?
No. Two-factor authentication can also be set up using a preferred telephone number so you can verify your identity by telephone call regardless of where you are located in the world.
I am a volunteer with a Volunteer Office 365 account, which has two-factor authentication already enabled. Do I need to set two-factor authentication for single sign-on as well?
If you are an IET volunteer with a Volunteer Office 365 account, we recommend you register as a member on the single sign-on homepage and choose Volunteer Office 365 as your preferred method of logging in. You don’t need to choose two-factor authentication as this is already enabled as part of your Volunteer Office 365 login.
I am not a volunteer but I have my own Office 365 account. Can I use this as my preferred log in option?
Yes. If you have your own Office 365 account, you can still sign up for a ‘non-member’ account on the single sign-on homepage and select the Office 365 button as your preferred method to log in in future.
This is not currently available but may become available in the future.
You will be able to choose one social login using either your Facebook or Google login credentials. If you’re an IET volunteer and have an Office 365 account with us, you can choose to use your log in details from your Volunteer Office 365 account.
We have chosen Facebook and Google as they are the most popular social media platforms.
No, once your preferred method of logging in has been set up, in future this will be the way that you will access your IET web account.
On your first visit, you will need to complete the migration process if you already have an existing account. You will then be able to log in using your email address and existing password.
If left dormant, your login session will automatically expire after one hour.
We are planning to launch a single sign-on in June 2019. When the service goes live, you will see a new login screen when you try to log in. There will be “How to” videos available to help you migrate your existing account or set up an account, depending on whether you are a member or non-member.
There will be “How to” videos on the log-in portal to show you how to reset your password.
We recommend that members create a complex password in line with recommendations from the National Institute of Standards and Technology to make it more difficult for hackers to breach your account.
You can still register with an email address and password.
If you opt to use your Facebook or Google account to verify your user details, some information is passed from the login provider to the IET (you are prompted when this happens). The IET does not send any data to the login provider, who only knows that the user has linked their identity to an IET account.
If you’ve chosen to opt in for two-factor authentication, we will request the minimum amount of data (name, email address and a mobile or telephone number for your one-time passcode to be sent to) solely for the purpose of providing you with two-factor authentication
The number you provide will be stored in our system as part of the single sign-on process for two-factor authentication.
In line with GDPR requirements, no personal details used to register on the system will be used for marketing purposes. Please be aware that the system will not automatically update a members’ email address if this is changed in the single sign-on portal. This information is only used to provide you with a secure login to our websites. If you change your email address, please remember to change it separately in MyIET.
